How to clean this aluminum rim?

So I have a set of wheels with Weinmann concave rims. They have some surface corrosion. Spots are more than black than than they appear. Anyway, how can I remove this? I used Mothers Aluminum polish but information technology just polishes the rim. Some procedure with a Dremel tool? Lost crusade?

How much time and effort do y'all want to put into them? If you're serious about them, you tin can always moisture sand before polishing. Start with a 400 dust sand paper and in increments of 400 piece of work upwardly to 1200 grit. And then requite them a proficient smooth and a wax to protect them. Polish just shines, it doesn't protect unless information technology has wax or constructed polymers to do the job. I've done this on aluminum mags and information technology works, but you lot'll end upwards with one arm larger than the other

Sounds similar that would exist much easier with a bare rim without spokes in the way. Not sure that I desire to invest that kind of time and effort.

I recently obtained an erstwhile aluminum Vitus with a lot of blank aluminum parts of the frame, wheels, and components. I got some Mothers Magazine & Aluminum Polish and get really good results with information technology. Slap-up shine but it is fourth dimension consuming.

That being said...IMO, the corrosion effectually the spoke holes is pretty extensive. And I think that you lot'll soon start seeing cracks around them (if there aren't already). So maybe you don't desire to waste material fourth dimension polishing, and go ahead and invest in new wheels.

I spent hours polishing the factory Ukai rims of my '75 Fuji S-10S with Simichrome polish until they admittedly gleamed! Then someone asked if my bike had chrome steel rims... (like the earlier years did...) < Sigh! >

I imagine wire wool would work pretty well.

used on bazillion dollar mega yachts is neat stuff and for surface corrosion I gingerly scrape with the tip of a knife.

If it doesn't come off with steel wool & Turtlewax chrome cleaner information technology won't come up off.

I would approximate that corrosion inside the rim is substantial.

Those are non good rims for a rain bicycle!

If it was mine I would exercise something to help prevent further corrosion. Some people utilise WD40. I use diesel. Take a dropper bottle total of diesel & carefully identify a pocket-size amount on each bad spot & permit information technology soak in. It's a cheap fix that may become you lot by long enough before you lot demand new wheels.

ps: don't over do it & wipe off brake surfaces on rims with rubbing alcohol before you ride.

I like Simichrome for polished aluminum; still I dubiety that it volition brand your significant corrosion disappear. If you lot are intent on restoring these rims, delacing and so sanding with sequentially finer grits is the way to become. You might effort a dremel tool with a fine (brass) wire castor just the results may non be up to your liking. If you're not upwards to the work to restore, just ride them as is. They don't look all that bad and, anyway, nobody can run into the corrosion when the wheels are spinning.

Proficient luck.

You could effort varies grades of steel wool but this may not be all that good looking without removing the spokes to get a consistent finish. It's a lot of piece of work either mode. Aren't these non-hooked rims anyway?

Flitz! All-time stuff always followed by an awarding of carnauba automotive paste wax. After waxing, use alcohol to remove it from the brake flats.

I had these rims on my onetime Fuji. They were custom built wheels with Campy Tipo HF hubs. Rode them for 30+ years on and off. The down side was mine were NOT hook chaplet. They never needed truing. The rims were very potent and used to come up in 36, xl and 48 holes for tandem and heavy touring apply.

The discoloration isn't ON the rim, it'south IN the aluminum. Nothing volition remove this. The aluminum has oxidized from age, neglect or exposure and this is how information technology looks at present. Don't waste fourth dimension or coin trying to fix what isn't broken. Look for cracks or splits and otherwise only ride. I have many vintage motorcycles with discolored engine cases and they're just fine. No amount of elbow grease will solve your issue. Call it patina and live with information technology.
